Two new Nexus Network thinkpieces published

14 October 2015 | Two new thinkpieces from the Nexus Network thinkpiece series have just been published. The series has been started in July 2014 to help scope and define nexus approaches and stimulate debate across the linked domains of food, energy, water and the environment.

Energy, food and water security in West Africa

The thinkpiece from Professor Subhes Bhattacharyya, Nicola Bugatti and Hannes Bauer investigates approaches to energy, food and water security in West Africa. Whilst the region has many challenges it is growing fast economically. An integrated approach to development is imperative to make best use of the available resources to ensure sustainable development.

The authors find that innovative ‘bottom-up’ approaches with the support of NGOs, private entrepreneurs and private-public partnerships can be successful, but need to be scaled up so fairer, equitable and prosperous living conditions can be established in West Africa.

Impact investing and the nexus

Impact investing seeks to create both financial return and positive social or environmental impact. Frederik Dahlmann's thinkpiece reviews activities of relevance to nexus thinking in the financial sector, to explore the overlap between nexus thinking and impact investing.

The paper explores whether investors and professionals in the financial sector already employ suitable strategies, frameworks and metrics or whether other, more innovative investment criteria, data and information are needed to support a nexus-based investment approach.
