The water-energy-food nexus involves analysing the complex trade-offs involved in managing food, energy and water resources. Synergies between sectors that can enhance resource security and well-being are hard to mobilise. Multiple Sustainable Development Goals on water, food and energy, poverty reduction, inclusive development, ecosystems, equity, sustainable consumption, and cities, highlight the new sectors and capacities required. Achieving inter-sectoral compromise is piecemeal and fragile. Our understanding is evolving, but our ability to integrate diverse objectives and deal with diverse and patchwork policy and political goals for food, energy and water remain difficult. This session will address challenges to developing integrated policy, and will discuss successes to mobilise sectoral responses to achieve multiple objectives.
